Whiskey Glossary & Terminology
“The moment you know the language of whiskey, the story in the bottle begins to unfold.”
Why do you need words to drink whiskey? But the moment you start to seriously enjoy whiskey, this world demands a "language."
Peat, First Fill, Angel's Share, Column Still... these unfamiliar and technical terms might initially seem like mere marketing jargon. In reality, they are core terms that encapsulate whiskey's philosophy, technology, history, and flavor.
To understand a glass of whiskey, you need to know the underlying techniques, and to understand those techniques, you need to accurately interpret the terminology. A single word on the label can explain:
- "What kind of cask was this aged in, and for how long?"
- "Why is it so spicy?"
- "Why is this bottle a limited edition?"
Furthermore, when writing tasting notes or sharing your preferences with others, these words are essential for expressing your sensations concretely.
