Ardbeg Galileo
Ardbeg
Tasting Notes
The Ardbeg Galileo, launched in September 2012 at the British Space Centre, represents a truly groundbreaking moment in whisky history, coinciding with Ardbeg's pioneering experiment of sending new-make spirit into space. This exceptional 1999-2012 vintage expression showcases the marriage of whisky matured in ex-Marsala and ex-Bourbon barrels, earning prestigious recognition as both World's Best Single Malt and Best Islay Single Malt at the 2013 World Whiskies Awards. The journey begins with an explosive nose of tropical pineapple slices and desiccated coconut, followed by waves of toffee and spice, all anchored by Ardbeg's signature phenolic peat. On the palate, this 49% ABV expression first reveals its coastal heritage with a salty greeting, before transitioning to smooth cream and dried apricots. The finish demonstrates remarkable finesse, offering a soft and sweet conclusion wrapped in tendrils of earthy smoke. While it may not be Ardbeg's most powerful release, Galileo proves itself to be an impeccably balanced dram that delivers all the complexity and smokiness that enthusiasts expect from this legendary Islay distillery, truly living up to its celestial namesake.
