This year's Midleton Very Rare 2023 is a true masterpiece, crafted with meticulous attention to detail by master distiller Kevin O'Gorman. The aroma instantly captivates, unveiling a harmonious blend of succulent fruits like nectarines, melons, green apples, and apricots, intertwined with the warmth of pot still spices like ginger and peppercorns. Notes of dried flowers, golden syrup, and vanilla create a rich tapestry of aromas that hint at the depth of flavor to come. On the palate, a luscious creaminess envelops the senses, accompanied by fruity nuances and the delicate herbaceous quality of chamomile tea. The pot still spices add intrigue, weaving through the floral grain whiskey notes, while the charred oak contributes layers of complexity with its wood-derived spices and hints of candied orange and dried apricot. The finish culminates in a crescendo of fruits and spices, ultimately giving way to the lingering embrace of oak tannins and the antique grain whiskey's character.
