This 30-year-old Mortlach whisky is a true departure from the typical light and fruity Speyside expressions. Dubbed the "Midnight Malt," it embraces the distillery's renowned meaty character. Matured initially in refill American and European oak casks, it then undergoes a unique triple cask finishing in Bordeaux wine, Calvados, and Guatemalan rum barrels – an unconventional combination. The result is a complex and layered dram, offering a harmonious blend of robust peppery spice, juicy orchard fruits, and decadent notes of rich chocolate. The nose greets with a mellow and slightly prickly aroma, unveiling savory and herbal undertones reminiscent of pork crackling and dried sage. On the palate, a delightful burst of winey, apple-like fruitiness gives way to a long, spicy intensity with lingering black pepper notes. The finish is equally impressive, with a sweet, deep-flavored persistence and a gentle peppery spice, complemented by hints of mint chocolate when water is added. This limited release of 350 bottles showcases Mortlach's distinctive character and the art of expert cask blending.
