Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013
Bruichladdich
Tasting Notes
This Islay single malt whisky from Port Charlotte is a true embodiment of the rugged island it hails from. The barley used for distillation is locally grown, imparting an earthy, peaty character that is unmistakably Islay. Upon nosing, you're greeted with the familiar scent of Jammie Dodger biscuits, intertwined with the smoky aroma of cask char and forest floor. The palate is a delightful symphony of flavors, with notes of brown sugar, clove, peppercorn, dried cherry, and a hint of phenolic smoke complemented by the taste of burnt bread. The finish lingers with the warmth of a bonfire's embers and the chewy sweetness of dates. A portion of this whisky was finished in Pessac-Léognan wine casks, adding a subtle fruity sweetness that perfectly balances the robust, smoky profile. This is a whisky that truly captures the essence of Islay, offering a taste of the island's rugged beauty in every sip.
