An intriguing and unique whisky from the Danish distillery Stauning, their Bastard expression is a captivating blend of flavors. Crafted from locally sourced rye grain, it initially spent three years maturing in new, toasted American oak casks, imparting a rich, spicy character. What sets this whisky apart is its subsequent six-month finishing in casks that previously held Oro de Oaxaca mezcal, infusing it with earthy, smoky notes reminiscent of agave. The result is a delightful fusion of flavors, with the spicy rye complemented by hints of cinder toffee, warm sawdust, dried citrus peels, candied ginger, and a subtle yet enticing smokiness. The vegetal oak notes and a touch of brown sugar add depth and complexity, creating a whisky that is both delicious and fascinating, offering a truly unique tasting experience.
